FAQ
What is a hearing loss?
A hearing loss occurs when one or more parts of the auditory system, does not function properly. Hearing losses can range from mild to profound and can exisit across all or only some of the frequencies of sound.
How can hearing loss impact education?
Think about it. What do students do most often at school? Students listen at school;they listen to learn, to communicate, to interact and to comprehend. If there is any sort of barrier presented, that prevents or hinders listening, this can greatly impact the academic success of a student. Children who are born with a hearing loss are also at an even greater disadvantage. They do not have the access to language that a hearing child does. This can delay their language development, which has a negative impact on all academic areas.
How do students with a hearing loss gain access to the curriculum?
Many students with hearing loss in a mainstream setting use amplification and/or sign language interpreters to gain access to the curriculum. Hearing aids and Cochlear Implants paired with the use of an FM system, help students to get the best possible auditory input in the classroom. Students who communicate in sign language, have a full time sign language interpreter, who is trained to interpret all educational materials.
